Most Amazon sellers treat PPC like a volume knob — turn it up when sales dip, turn it down when ACoS spikes. The problem is that reactive bidding burns budget on keywords that never convert and starves campaigns that actually drive rank.
The sellers who win long-term treat advertising as a system: structured campaigns, disciplined harvesting, and bid rules tied to margin — not gut feel.
1. Separate discovery from defense
Run broad and auto campaigns for keyword discovery, but keep exact-match campaigns dedicated to your proven converters. Mixing them in one ad group makes it impossible to see which terms deserve higher bids versus which should be negated.
2. Harvest search terms weekly
Pull search term reports every seven days. Promote high-converting queries into exact campaigns at controlled bids. Add underperformers as negative keywords in auto and broad campaigns before they drain spend.
3. Bid to contribution margin, not ACoS alone
A 25% ACoS might be profitable on a high-margin SKU and disastrous on a low-margin one. Calculate break-even ACoS per ASIN using landed cost, FBA fees, and target profit — then set bid caps accordingly.
4. Use dayparting where it matters
If your conversion data clusters around specific hours or days, adjust bids or pause campaigns during dead zones. Not every category benefits, but consumables and B2B products often show clear patterns.
5. Protect your branded terms
Competitors bid on your brand name more often than sellers expect. A low-cost exact campaign on your brand + product keywords prevents conquest ads from stealing high-intent clicks at a premium.
6. Align ads with listing quality
No bid strategy fixes a weak main image, missing A+ content, or fewer reviews than the category median. Before scaling spend, ensure your listing conversion rate is competitive — otherwise you're paying to send traffic to a page that can't close.
7. Test Sponsored Brands for category terms
For competitive head terms where Sponsored Products CPCs are extreme, Sponsored Brands can capture top-of-search real estate with a lower cost per click — especially when your store has multiple related ASINs to showcase.
The goal isn't the lowest ACoS — it's the highest profitable revenue. Structure campaigns so you can scale winners and cut losers in days, not months.
